WORLD ASSOCIATION OF WRESTLING

OCTOBER OUTRAGE XI RESULTS AND FULL REPORT
Credit to Stew of UKFF

There isn’t another hall that I’ve been to that creates just as intense a big fight atmosphere than The Talk in Norwich, and that was very much in evidence last night as Zebra Kid put his WAW World Heavyweight Title on the line against “The Guvnor” Martin Stone. The rowdy, drunken atmosphere created in large part by Zebra’s football teammates (“He’s black, he’s white, he’s up and down the right, he’s Zebra Kiiiiiid!”) contributed to making Zebra/Stone a memorable main event to cap off one of WAW’s best shows in recent memory. Zebra and Stone are two of the best main event heavyweight style performers in Britain, and the results were as you’d expect. Dramatic, stiff, engaging. A match befitting of “World Title” status, quite frankly, with Stone never backing down an inch from the baying mob – which only enhanced the atmosphere all the more. Stone went 1-0 up with the use of the ropes, only for Zebra to equalise in the next round with a rear naked choke. It appeared that Stone had won the belt after a three count following the use of a foreign object – however, WAW championship committee member Michael Mann pointed this out to the official, who allowed a restart. A superkick and Zebra Crossing later, and Zebra retained. The crowd invaded the ring post match, jumping up and down and celebrating with their champion. A beaten Stone offered a show of respect, and left the ring to a round of applause. Brilliant.

On any other night, that would be head and shoulders match of the night – but not on this night, when Sam Slam defended his British heavyweight title against Doug Williams in an absorbing contest that included smooth technical wrestling peppered with suplexes and submissions. Williams, working heel and challenging under “American rules” (one fall to a finish rather than the traditional rounds) made liberal use of manager-for-the-night Sam Knee, who’s a braver man than I for working ringside at The Talk. Late in the match, Doug brought the bell into the ring, but was schoolboyed by Sam. The referee noted the bell on the mat, and Doug immediately claimed that he had been struck. The referee disqualified Slam, but he retained his title. An unsatisfying conclusion, but there is scope for a rematch, and these two worked very well indeed.

Another cracking match was double ladies champion Britani Knight successfully defending against her mother Sweet Saraya in the latest match in their series. I’ve seen quite a few of these matches, and this was possibly the best I’ve seen. Just bad-tempered, rough stuff from both girls, who don’t think twice about laying it in. I think I see enough of them to be able to offer a valid opinion, but in my view, this year Britani has surpassed both her mother and Jetta to become the top female talent in the UK. Working as a heel especially, she’s just fantastic, and brings a level of bitchiness and physicality that sets her apart from her peers. It’s a mark of how much Britani has increased her standing that this time last year, I’d have expected nothing other than a Saraya win. This year, when Britani made a successful defence of her belt, it was the only result that made sense. The sky is the limit. I know she had a match with Wesna in Norway earlier this year (which I’ve finally managed to get my hands on), but surely 2010 the priority must be to get this girl more international experience.
Completing the title matches on the show was Zak Zodiak’s defence of the Light Heavyweight Title over “Filthy” Phil Powers. Both of these guys are criminally underrated by fans (neither featured in the UKFF 50 for example), but they’re definitely among the smoothest and most reliable guys around. They got the show off to a great start, and provided you can get past the fact that a child in a Zodiak mask (Zebra’s son Ricky Jr, as Zodiak Kid) is constantly doing highspots right in front of the referee without so much as a public warning, it was fantastic. Powers got fall 1 with a guillotine legdrop, Zodiak got the second with a Michinoku Driver. I can’t rightly remember, but the finish may have been either a cross body or a frog splash. Great opener.

The international tag match between London Inc and the Norwegian team of Aron Frost & Victor Dale (which, if I heard correctly were billed as The Rainmakers) nearly degenerated into a riot. One male was forceably removed from his seat by security and roster members for a red-hot heated exchange with both DKJ and Jet Logan of London Inc, and the match itself degenerated into a brawl at ringside and was eventually thrown out as a double DQ. The match itself was great, and I was particularly impressed with Victor Dale and his teamwork with Aron Frost. I’d only seen Dale for the first time the day before at HEW, and I can confirm that this guy is *good*. My thought while watching them was “why haven’t the WAW Tag Team titles been reintroduced yet so that these guys can be the champs?” which, on the basis of one match is impressive work.

The tag team match with the recently turned heel Scott Fusion and T-Bone against the team of Alex Young and JoFX was excellent too. A heel turn for Fusion was just what the doctor ordered. Bizarrely, both he and Young were counted out of the ring, and rather than the match being declared a double countout, the referee allowed the match to continue as a singles match, where the impressive JoFX ran through T-Bone like a house o’ fire, looking a million dollars en route to victory.
When the worst match on your show is still a pretty great one (as was the case with Brett Meadows vs Steve Quintain), you know that the show has been good. Quintain won by slipping out of a possible Essex Bomb attempt into a Gator submission. Easy, effective, and got over a treat.

A home run of a show. Certainly the best WAW show since April’s show at The Talk and one of the best British shows of the year. An essential purchase when it comes out on DVD. The return to The Talk is on February 7th, and while nothing is announced as yet, I urge anybody to come and experience a show at The Talk. Fabulous stuff.

WAW 15th Anniversary show, Gt Yarmouth, 22nd February

1. Marco Marinelli pinned Alex Young.
2. Brett Meadows drew Steve Quintain - 15 minute time limit draw.
3. Danny Blaze & Scott Fusion defeated The London Boys.
4. RQW Womens Title: Jetta pinned Sweet Saraya © to become the new champion - NEW CHAMP.
5. WAW European Champion Zebra Kid pinned WAW British Lightweight Champion "Gentleman" Jimmy Ocean.
6. WAW British Light Heavyweight Title: Zak Zodiak © beat WAW U23 Champion Aron Frost 2-1 to retain his title.

The major news coming out of the 15th Anniversary show is that the Knight Family is now fractured down the middle, as Britani Knight turned on her mother Saraya to assist Jetta in winning the RQW Womens Title. When Jetta's manager Sam Knee was sent to the back, things looked to be in hand for Saraya... but after a referee bump, Britani got in the ring and kicked out Saraya's knee (which had been worked on all match), and put Jetta on top for the three count. Post match, Destiny challenged Jetta for the RQW Womens Title. While Destiny is hardly a fan favourite, the Yarmouth faithful still popped for one of their own laying out the challenge against the hated Jetta.

Tensions also reached boiling point in the unresolved conflict between Zebra Kid and the injured Ricky Knight when Zebra offered the olive branch of having Ricky corner him in his upcoming World Title match with Erik Isaakson - but Ricky saw this as Zebra "patronising" him, and cut an impassioned promo that he's not past it yet and didn't appreciate Zebra's charity. Zebra suggested that perhaps - given that he's been injured for most of the last 14 months - Ricky should call it a day. This caused Ricky to throw a wobbler and promise Zebra that he would work doubly hard to come back just so he could teach him a few more lessons. Ricky said that only his little princess Britani seems to care about him - so the battle lines look to be drawn with Zebra, Saraya and Zak Zodiak on one side, and Ricky and Britani on the other side.

In news coming out of the show - the next presentation is on 22/3/08, and will be a WAWW (womens) show - and features the first two marquee matchups...

REPORT FROM NOVEMBER 2ND ACADEMY SHOW

On November 2nd 2008 WAW presented its normal monthly Academy show to showcase the up and coming talent coming through its successful training academy

JUDAS vs KIEFER KNOWLES

The opening contest pitted two of WAW most promising students, Judas the massive overhouse and Kiefer Knowles the popular local star and winner of the 2008 Marina Cup, In a match which was mostly dominated by the stronger Judas both wrestlers gave a good account of themselves for their limited time in the wrestling business, Judas used his obvious strength over his opponent sub doing Kiefer on a number and occasions with his power attack, Kiefer when given the chance used speed to keep Judas off balance and after escaping a nerve hold hit a number of clotheslines to Judas managed to knock the big man down to a knee but when attempting a cross body block off the second rope he fell fowl to a huge Judas powerslam for the winning pin fall.

DANNY DARKO vs "MILKY BAR KID" JAMES O'HAGEN

Academy trainee “Milky Bar Kid” James O'Hagen was given a tough start to his wrestling career as he had to face one half of the Lost Boys tag team and much more experienced Danny Darko, in a match which was a good technical contest O'Hagen showed at times that he has the ring skills to stay with his opponent and showed he has a bright future ahead of him, Darko used submission moves and some underhanded tactics to control his opponent and also scoring a number of near falls, the end came when Darko hit his finishing fall away slam which finally put O'Hagen away after 10 minutes.

BRITANI KNIGHT vs DESTINY

WAW next presented a match from its women's division between the high-flying member of the Knight family Britani Knight and the former WAW World and Britsh ladies champion Destiny, this match is a top contendure for this years match of the year with non stop action from the first minute to the last, Britani using her quickness and high flying to knock Destiny down a number of times, the fans where upset as Destiny was using the ropes behind the refs back while having Britani in a boston crab as well as breaking the rules at every chance with punches and hair pulling, despite her best efforts Destiny just couldn't get that that winning fall, hitting move after move every time she went to cover Britani she could only get a two count, this continued until the 20 minute time limit ran out meaning this entertaining contest had to end in a draw

BRETT "THE KRAFT" MEADOWS vs DELICIOUS DANNY BLAZE

The next match began with the new HEW champion Brett “The Kraft” Meadows issuing a challenge to anyone he had not beaten before to step in the ring with him, to the surprise of the fans the wrestler who answered this challenge was the returning Delicious Danny Blaze, Blaze who had been out of WAW for a year with a knee injury could not of picked a tougher opponent for his return and in the opening exchanges it was Meadows who had the advantage, it was Blaze who against the run of play scored the opening fall with his finishing move off the top rope driving Meadows into the mat for the 3 count, Meadows made Blaze pay for that by punishing him in the next fall which he got to level the match up at 1-1, with a fall each but with Blaze much the worse for wear Meadows continued his attack even working on Blazes previously injured knee with submission moves, the end for Blaze finally came when after several near falls Meadows hit his Essex Bomb finishing move to get the 2nd and winning fall

MAIN EVENT

ZAK ZODIAC & ALEX YOUNG vs TANK & MICK O'ROONEY

In the main event of the show Sam Knee introduced his new tag team of Tank O'Rooney and his brother who has been brought to WAW by Tank, Mick O'Rooney in a match against WAW Academy star Alex Young and WAW Light Heavyweight champion Zak Zodiac, the match begun with Zak squaring off against Tank, hitting Tank with quick blows Zak attempted to knock his bigger opponent off his feet but was unable to do this and it was Tank who took control, Mick entered the match and the beating continued until Zak made a comeback scoring a couple of near falls, Zak finally tagged Alex into the match and he used his skills to attack both his bigger opponents and scoring a couple of near falls, Sam Knee made himself known in the match by constantly interfering behind the refs back much to the anger of some fans, Mick started an attack on Alex's leg tieing it in the ropes and stretching it while Alex wrived in pain unable to escape, despite several attempt by referee David Finch Mick refussed to break the hold giving Finch no other option but to disqualify Mick O'Rooney leaving the match between Zak and Tank as Alex had to retire hurt from the injures caused to his leg, Tank tried to attack Zak but missed and Zak climbed the top rope and hit a splash to score the winning fall, Sam Knee was called to the ring by Commissioner Jason Cross only to be attacked by Zak and after a top rope elbow drop was thrown out of the ring which brought the show to a close.
